What to expect from the tour?
Join us in this Expertour through the streets of Old San Juan and walk through the mesmerizing colonial architecture of the city while learning about the history and music traditions of Puerto Rico from a music expert, Dr. Omar Ruiz Vega. We begin our Expertour with a discussion of the musical practices of our indios Taínos and move chronologically to discuss other Puerto Rican music genres like Jíbaro Music, Bomba, Puerto Rican Classical Music, as well as more recent musical developments like Salsa and Reggaetón. Through our musical journey we visit iconic places in Old San Juan related to the music history of Puerto Rico. For example we show you the streets that inspired the famous Salsa song of Héctor Lavoe “Calle Luna, Calle Sol” and the beautiful statue of Salsa composer Tite Curet Alonso, located in his favorite bench in Plaza de Armas. You will also visit other important historical sites like the San Juan’s Gate and Tapia Theater. The tour is enriched with audiovisual resources to provide participants with a music-historical experience that is at the same time dynamic, enriching and entertaining.
